In This Season

Like many other people who live in Eastern NC, fall is without a doubt my favorite season. There's something about the cool mornings, clear days, and of course college football, baseball playoffs, and the start of hunting season that makes fall the best time of year to me. As much as I would love for it to stick around all year, I know that eventually winter is coming and soon will spring and summer. I am thankful to live in a state where we get to experience 4 different seasons as each one brings about new life or some sort of change. Just as the seasons in nature change, so do the seasons of life. Sometimes you are happy to give that part of your life a big "see ya!" and other times you are sad to see it pass by.

For me, it's those seasons when you feel tested, like you have no purpose, or that feel mundane that seem like the WORST! How often do we look past the situation we are currently in and look forward to the season ahead? Whether it be a new job, getting married, or starting a family. Guilty. It can be very frustrating when you can't figure out what God's plan is for you in whatever circumstances you are going through. The Almighty, All Powerful, Infinitely Wise God we serve does not assign us to random tasks in which He does not have a purpose for. Our knowledge and understanding is so limited that we aren’t capable enough to comprehend the reason why God takes us through "those" seasons of our life. It is when we surrender the thoughts that our ways and our efforts are greater in exchange for complete trust of God's faithfulness, his promises and his unwavering steadfast love and protection over us that His plans start to make sense.

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." --Isaiah 55: 8-9

The only way to align your purpose with God's purpose? Be like Jesus! Just as Jesus did, we need to spend time in prayer.

Daily, we need to pray:

"God, how can I serve you today?"

"How can I follow your agenda and not my own?"

"What decisions should I make that would be pleasing to you?"

"Show me where you are at work today"

"Help to make my actions, the words I speak, and the thoughts I have to be more like yours"

We also need to be like Jesus by applying God's Word to our lives. Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Love your neighbor as you love yourself (Matt 22: 36-39). Yes, this includes your coworker who annoys you and is hard to work with, or your boss who doesn't notice all the hard work you do. This commandment also includes the people you may serve on a daily basis who are demanding, opinionated, or unforgiving. Love them, encourage them, and be the temple of God wherever you are in this moment. Strive to carry out the mission of God--to spread the Good News of his salvation through Christ's work on the cross.

"And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father."--Colossians 3:17

No matter what season you’re in pray that you will learn something from it. Pray that you will see obstacles as opportunities, that you will keep your eyes on God more than your circumstances, and ultimately that you will come to know Him more than ever before. In this season, let everything you do bring glory to God through Jesus Christ and allow Him to use you according to the purposes He has for your life.

"So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you."--1 Peter 5: 6-7
